Position Description
Reports to Concert and Chamber Chorale Artistic Director
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The Boulder Chorale seeks an up-and-coming choral conductor to be mentored by the Artistic Director (AD) of one of Boulder’s finest – and oldest – community choruses. The Assistant to the Artistic Director (Asst) will work closely with the AD to learn the real-world skills of conducting and leading a diverse group of choral musicians in the community chorus setting.
Assistant Artistic Management
At the direction of the AD, the Asst will be prepared to:
- Provide overall assistance to the Chorale which includes the Boulder Concert Chorale and Boulder Chamber Chorale
- Help with season planning (research repertoire, suggest soloists, program notes, etc.) as needed by the AD
- Assist with member auditions twice annually and voice placements for the adult ensembles if asked by the AD
- Learn all music ahead of rehearsals and be prepared to substitute for the AD in either rehearsal or in concert if needed. Listen in rehearsals and advise AD about musical issues.
- Sing in both Chamber and Concert Chorales if needed.
- Coach singers with technology for learning music when needed (My Choral Coach) • Take the pulse of the chorus by friending singers and hearing their joys and concerns and relaying them to the AD
- Assist the Librarian and AD in securing music
- Attend all concerts and listen in the hall for issues of balance and sound quality. • Arrange singers on the risers. Warm-up singers for performance or otherwise fill in for the AD if she is attending to other business
- Work with the AD, the Chorale membership, the Board, and staff to promote a positive atmosphere of community within the organization
- Promote the Chorale’s mission in the community

REQUIREMENTS
- Experience in choral directing and conducting or working with a community-based chorus and with singers of various musical skills and experience
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Choral Music; experience in vocal pedagogy and soloing.
- Preferred, but not required, experience conducting instrumentalists • Commitment to the value of providing a quality musical experience for all who wish to sing in a high-level community chorus environment
- Combination of outstanding musicianship and good interpersonal skills • Foundational knowledge of choral repertoire
- Excellent beginning teaching skills
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Flexibility in working with a diverse group of volunteers and personalities • Ability to support an Artistic Director, and to keep confidentiality
COMPENSATION AND HOURS
This is a part-time hourly position which we anticipate will require 20-30 hours per month. Pay range: $21-26/hour. Hours will be flexible, but must accommodate afternoon, evening and/or weekend rehearsal and performance schedules. No benefits are provided.
