Music Director (Full-Time)

Salary: $70,000–$85,000 + benefits
Foothills Unitarian Church seeks a collaborative, imaginative, and grounded Music Director to steward a vibrant music ministry rooted in belonging, spiritual depth, and courageous love. At Foothills, music is a shared spiritual practice and one of the primary ways our congregation experiences connection, meaning, and church itself.
This full-time role blends artistic leadership, choir direction, pastoral presence, and strong organizational skill. The Music Director partners closely with ministers, musicians, production staff, and volunteers to shape worship that is meaningful, participatory, and well-supported.
Key Responsibilities include:

Approaching music as ministry while honoring preparation, craft, beauty, and excellence

Curating music that invites reflection, courage, joy, and congregational participation

Collaborating with ministers to align music with the theological and emotional arc of worship

Serving as primary Choir Director, cultivating a culture of care, belonging, and musical growth

Selecting repertoire with depth and intention, balancing challenge with accessibility

Leading additional ensembles and community music-making throughout the year

Expanding the church’s musical library and honoring both tradition and new musical possibilities

Recruiting, mentoring, and supporting volunteer and staff musicians

Building clear systems for scheduling, communication, and worship preparation

Overseeing the music budget, library, instruments, licensing compliance, and long-range planning
Desired Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent professional experience

Minimum 5 years of music leadership experience (congregational or community arts preferred)

Excellence in choral/vocal leadership; piano skills preferred

Ability to lead a wide range of musical styles (folk, gospel, soul, contemporary, classical, UU hymnody)

Strong organizational and communication skills
