Organist

Works closely with: Trinity Choir Director, Coordinator of Music Ministries
Status: Part-time, typically 10 hours per week
Job Summary
The organist is the chief accompanist of liturgical music, and hymnody at Trinity Lutheran
Church. H/she encourages congregational singing, supports sung liturgy parts, accompanies choirs
and soloists, practices appropriately to provide a high quality of music, and is a member of the
Worship Committee and the Music Staff.
The organist will be employed for 12 months out of the year. Paid compensation is $30 -$40 an
hour, commensurate with experience.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
• In addition to Sunday morning worship and choir rehearsals, the organist is expected to play
for special services (including Ash Wednesday, Lenten Services, Maundy Thursday, Good
Friday, Easter Vigil and Easter, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.) In addition, the organist is
expected to play for weddings and funerals (as his/her schedule allows) and will be
compensated with an appropriate honorarium.
• The organist is under the direct supervision of the Senior Pastor and is expected to support the
direction of worship as outlined by the Church Council and Worship Committee. The organist
is a member of Trinity Lutheran Staff and will attend regular Worship Committee meetings, as
well as staff and music staff meetings as requested.
• The organist leads the musical portions of the Sunday morning worship by providing: prelude
and postlude music which is appropriate to the season and theme of individual worship
services; music for offertory if none is available; selections for prelude, postlude and offertory
are to be submitted to the office staff ideally one month in advance for bulletin preparation
• The organist provides hymn and liturgy accompaniment that promotes congregational singing.
Working closely with the Choir director and choir, the accompanist serves as the instrument
leader of hymn-singing.
• As accompaniment to the choir, solo vocalists and instrumentalists, the organist works closely
with, and follows the direction of the choir director. The accompanist may be asked to attend
extra rehearsals as needed.
• The organist arranges for periodic organ, piano and harpsicord tunings and repairs, and sees
that the yearly organ maintenance contract is in place.
• The organist rehearses with and plays for summer musical offerings as needed.
• Secures substitute for absences including communicating and clarifying all details of services as
well as submitting a voucher to assure that substitute is compensated properlyMinimum Qualifications:
• A member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America or able to support
Lutheran theology with integrity.
• Understand Lutheran Liturgical worship in order to provide appropriate music and a high quality of
music for worship
• Experienced as an organist/accompanist
• Audition will be part of interview process
